Winslow Homer, an American print-maker and landscape painter, was known for his artwork on marine subjects.
In his early career he worked as a commercial illustrator for 20 years, and later opened up his own studio. While he was already gifted i watercolour, he trained for just one year before producing oil paintings.
His artwork during the Civil War focussed on the war at home and its effect on women. After the war, many of his pieces were nostalgic, as if yearning for simpler times.
